아스톤의 「일본어 오노마토피아와 언어기원」에 관한 연구 자료는 일본어의 문자와 음성・ 음운의 특징을 자세히 기술하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 동물의 울음소리나 음악소리, 물소리, 종소 리, 어두 p음 등 모음과 자음의 상호관계와 어형변화에 따른 어감의 차이를 일상생활 속에서 사용하고 있는 어휘들을 직접 채록하여 체계적이고 종합적으로 분석하여 기술하고 있는 매우 귀중한 자료이다. 본 자료에서는 오노마토피아의 어휘수가 338어, 오노마토피아에서 파생된 어휘 103어 등 모두 합쳐 총 441어라는 명치시대의 어휘가 수록되어 있다. 각 어휘에 대해서는 상세하게 설 명을 하고 있으며 보편적인 언어기원에 대해서도 해박한 지식을 바탕으로 설득력 있게 기술 하고 있다. 특히 한국어와 일본어의 어원과 발음, 표기의 음가 비교 고찰은 일본어와의 계통 및 언어 차용관계에 있어서도 많은 시사점을 던져주고 있다. 또한 본 자료는 동시대의 로마자(ローマ 字)사전인 『和英語林集成』과 오노마토피아 어휘체계를 구축함에 있어 상호 보완적인 관계에 있으며 로마자(ローマ字) 자료를 통해 에도(江戸)시대 말기와 명치시대(17세기～19세기)의 오 노마토피아의 어휘체계를 재정립하고 언어사용에 있어서도 체계적으로 운용실태를 파악하는 데 매우 가치 있는 자료라고 할 수 있다.
A Study on the Japanese Onomatopoeia and Language Origins of A.G Aston
Aston's research data on Japanese Onomatopoeia and Language Origins not only describe the characteristics of Japanese letters, sounds, and phonemes in detail, but also systematically and comprehensively analyze and describe the differences in wording due to the interrelationship between vowels and consonants, such as animal cries, music sounds, water sounds, bells, and dark p sounds in everyday life. This data contains a total of 441 words from the Meiji era, including 338 vocabulary words of Onomatopoeia and 103 words derived from Onomatopoeia. Each vocabulary is explained in detail, and the universal language origin is also convincingly described based on extensive knowledge. In particular, the comparative consideration of the etymology, pronunciation, and pronunciation of Korean and Japanese has many implications for the relationship between the system and language borrowing with Japanese.
