- ‘民度(민도)’의 한일 근현대 용법 비교 - 신문자료를 중심으로 - -
본 논문은 ‘민도(民度)’라는 개념의 역사적 변천과 사용 양상에 대해 고찰한 연구로, 일본 의 아사히신문과 한국의 조선일보에 등장한 사례를 중심으로 분석을 진행했다. ‘민도’는 일본 근대에 만들어진 단어로, 국민의 생활 수준과 문명화 정도를 나타내는 지표로 사용되었다. 그 러나 최근에는 비판적이거나 차별적 맥락으로도 자주 사용된다. 이에 본 논문은 신문의 데이 터베이스를 통해 본 용어가 사용된 주제와 변화를 분석하고, 그 사회적 맥락을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 근대에는 조선과 대만 등에서 일본의 통치 정당성을 강조하기 위한 도구로 활용 되었으며, 이들 지역의 경제적으로 낙후된 수준, 즉 낮은 ‘민도’를 문명화해야 할 당위성을 설명하는 데 사용되었다. 한국 신문 역시 이를 답습하는 경향이 있었다. 1945년 이후, 일본의 패전과 함께 ‘민도’의 사용 빈도는 줄어들었으나 현대에도 한일 양국 에서 지속적으로 사용되고 있다. 현대에는 시민의 품격이나 사회문화적 수준을 논하는 문맥 에서 ‘민도’가 사용되며, 국민의 의식 수준과 관련된 논의에서 주로 다루어졌다. 본 연구에서는 근현대의 신문자료를 통해 한국과 일본에서 ‘민도’가 시대와 사회적 맥락에 따라 어떻게 변천해 왔는지를 종합적으로 살펴볼 수 있었다. 근대에는 국민의 생활 수준을 나타내는 지표, 식민지 통치와 관련된 담론의 도구, 현대에는 국민의 의식 수준과 관련된 논 의뿐만 아니라 인터넷 상에서 비판적, 차별적 용어로도 활용되고 있다. 민도의 확장과 변화를 분석하는 것이 앞으로의 연구 과제이다.
A Comparison of Modern and Contemporary Uses of ‘MINDO’ in Korea and Japan : Focusing on Newspaper Data
This paper examines the historical evolution and usage of the concept of ‘Mindo’, focusing on the cases of Asahi Shimbun in Japan and Chosun Ilbo in Korea. The word ‘Mindo’ was coined in modern Japan and was used as an indicator of a people's standard of living and degree of civilization. However, in recent years, it has also been used in a critical or discriminatory context. This paper analyses the themes and changes in the use of the term through newspaper databases and examines its social context. As a result, in modern times, ‘Mindo’ was used as a tool to emphasise the legitimacy of Japanese rule in colonies like Korea and Taiwan, and to explain the need to civilize the economically backward, or low ‘Mindo’ of these regions. Korean newspapers tended to follow suit. After 1945, with the defeat of Japan, the use of ‘Mindo’ became less frequent, but it continues to be used in present-day Korea and Japan. In the contemporary era, ‘Mindo’ is used in contexts discussing civic values or socio-cultural level, and it has been mainly addressed in discussions related to the level of consciousness of the people. This study uses modern and contemporary newspaper data to comprehensively examine how ‘Mindo’ has changed over time and social context in Korea and Japan. In modern times, it has been used as an indicator of people's living standards, as a tool of discourse related to colonial rule, and in contemporary times, as a critical and discriminatory term on the internet, as well as in discussions related to people's level of consciousness. Analyzing the expansion and transformation of ‘Mindo’ is a challenge for future research.
