Since the 1970s, the Zainichi Korean community has shown an interest in overseas Korean communities in different parts of the world. From the 1980s onwards, they actively engaged in transnational exchanges with Korean Americans. These exchanges were documented in Zainichi Korean media such as Sanzenri, Minto, and Seikyu which shaped contemporary discourses. The Zainichi Korean community has focused on the minority policies and social movements within the Korean American community, particularly highlighting the case of Lee Chul-su. This case illustrates the connection between affirmative action movements and the broader Asian minority rights movement in the United States. Through such examples, Zainichi Koreans are encouraged to build solidarity with other minority groups in Japan, such as the Okinawans and the Ainu people. Moreover, by showcasing the discrimination faced by Japanese Americans in the U.S., the discourse emphasizes that diaspora issues are also relevant in Japan, urging Japanese society to move beyond the concept of a homogeneous nation and advocate for changes in minority policies. Each Korean diaspora group forms connections through their ethnicity and the Korean Peninsula. The comparative analysis of their respective countries of residence highlights the strong influence of the homeland on both Zainichi Korean and Korean American communities. Additionally, the phenomena of de-territorialization and re-territorialization of homeland culture within these diaspora groups demonstrate their relationship with their homeland. By examining the transnational exchanges between Zainichi Koreans and Korean Americans as recorded in Sanzenri, Minto, and Seikyu from the 1970s to the 1990s, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the discourses of the Korean diaspora and the relationships between their homeland and host countries.
